How to overcome your bad habits

How to overcome your bad habits

Everyone has at least one bad habit that they want to stop but just can't, so today I'm going to be telling you exactly how to do that.

Physical habits

Some physical habits include nail biting, picking pimples or skin, biting your lip, or even something like bad posture. And these tips will help you on how to stop doing these things.

1.     try and keep your mind busy, I've known some people that would bite their nails at home, but not at work or school and it is because their minds aren't busy so it tries to occupy that space by doing something else. Like those little physical habits so keep your mind busy, and it won't feel the need to replicate the emptiness going on in there.

2.     If it is a habit that you know you are doing but don't realize it in the moment, you can write notes or even set reminders on your hand-held devices like a phone or tablet, for every 30 minutes to remind you to not bite your nails and so on.

3.     Say it three times- whenever you say something three times or more it can stick in your brain quite a bit better then you might think, this can help with not just your bad habits but also learning and remembering to do that chore you keep forgetting.

4.     Set small goals and this can work for mental habits as well but really you can just break it down in to small steps to motivate you to do that next step instead of one big one, like saying I'm gonna limit myself to doing this twice a week, and then next month I'll do once a week until eventually you stop altogether.

5.    Seek support, find a friend(s) or family member(s) to help you and observe when you do it without realizing and they can remind you to stop.

Mental habits

Popular mental habits are thinking bad of yourself, or thinking bad of others, not thinking through what you are saying and many more, the mind is a complicated place.

1.    Identify your bad habit, notice the behavior you want to change and understand it's triggers so you can avoid those triggers in the future.

2. Try and replace the habit with something more healthy that doesn't have bad consequences for example, if you think negatively about yourself, you can try and think positive things whenever you are thinking badly.

3. You can use the setting small goals idea i presented in my fourth tip for physical habits if you'd like to see it scroll back up a bit.

4. Talk about it, or even just to yourself you can say what the issue is and what you are going to do to fix it. And you can make journals saying what is happening, how you feel about it and what you can do to stop it.

5. The biggest one of all of these habits, stay committed and keep track of your progress  because doing will allow you to see the little wins you've accomplished and you should celebrate these wins as every step counts.
